Geography is a foundational science, essential to all other geoscience fields. It is the study of relationships between people and their environments using cartography, rapidly evolving Geographic Information Science (GIS) technologies, remote sensing (RS), and spatial analysis. The demand for skilled professionals in GIS and RS is growing rapidly, and our graduates become leaders in government agencies, industries, and business.
[Karis Gamboa ’21]: I like being outdoors. I like to learn about the land, and the fieldwork at Texas A&M is amazing.
[Dr. Stacey Lyle]: Students get to go and do experiential learning. They go out in the field, use the latest data and technology to map the earth. We'll fly drones. We'll use GPS receivers, cameras. We'll go out and core trees or go out on lakes and rivers. We'll travel the world globally, using lots of different technology to grasp the geography, come back, and represent it digitally.
[Karis Gamboa ’21]:It is very important for people to be part of programs like this because it's changing every day. Our world is changing every day with the new technologies, and we need to know how to adapt to it.
[Dr. Stacey Lyle]: The companies of tomorrow want to have students that understand the diversities in the physical world, and then be able to model it and look at those subtle changes of occurrence, of why something's happening, and then apply a plan that can be carried out to try to solve that. That's what we do here in geography.
